Abuja — The Director-General, National Commission for Museums and Monuments, Mallam Yusuf Abdallah Usman, has pledged his commitment to reposition the country's national museums to take their rightful place in the culture and tourism sector of the economy.
This was disclosed at the opening of the parley of management, curators and heads of stations of the commission, held at the Centre for Democratic Research and Training, Mambaya House, Kano.
The director-general who made this known while unfolding his three point- agenda and the four cardinal principles of his administration which includes, inventorisation of objects and monuments, conservation of heritage resources, promotion of staff training and research for the personnel of the commission.
These he said, would ensure that the NCMM met its set objectives of becoming a reference point in museum and heritage management in Africa and the world.
Abdallah, who promised empowering the curators of museum stations to operate with a certain level of independence towards making their stations enviable, also challenged them to come up with ideas that would enhance the operations of the museums.
While speaking on the standardisation and specialisation of the museums, Abdallah also maintained that the commission was currently working towards the establishment of a museum of national unity in Abuja to enhance the commission's operations.
He also elaborated on the 3- point agenda of his administration which include, the establishment of community museum/diversification of museums, identification and development of world heritage sites.
The Director of Administration and Supplies, Barr. O.A.S. Alasan in his remarks enjoined the Curators and all participants to support the plans of the Commission towards repositioning the Museum for the optimum productivity.
In his welcome address, the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero who was represented by the Curator, Gidan Makama Museum, Mallam Abdul Aliyu, expressed his gratitude to the Management for selecting Kano to host the event and also prayed for fruitful deliberations at the meeting
